Do Not Start With the Countertop Cutout
A “30-inch,” “36-inch,” or “42-inch” grill is not automatically a 30-, 36-, or 42-inch countertop opening. Manufacturers publish cutout dimensions for specific models, and those documents can include more than width and depth: notch details, power needs, gas-line routing, and insulated-jacket considerations may all be part of the installation plan. Late changes can require costly rework once the island is framed or the countertop has been cut. Choose the exact grill model, fuel type, and any required protective accessory before finalizing the island structure or countertop template.

What Must Be Measured Before You Buy a Built-In Grill?
Before buying a built-in grill, verify more than the countertop opening. You need the exact model’s cutout width, depth, and height; the interior island cavity; countertop thickness and support; enclosure materials; utility routing; venting considerations; clearance conditions; service access; and any compatible insulated jacket or liner.
A built-in grill cutout is the manufacturer-specified opening in the countertop and supporting island structure for a particular installation. It is not necessarily the same as the grill’s advertised width.

Start With the Exact Grill Model, Not Nominal Width
A grill’s advertised width describes its product format, not necessarily its fabrication opening. DCS’s Series 7 quick reference guide publishes cutout width, depth, and height separately from the grill’s nominal size. Treat a “36-inch grill” as a product category; treat the current cutout drawing as the source for the actual opening.
What to Download Before Ordering
- The grill’s current installation, care, and use manual
- The model-specific cutout or countertop-template document
- Fuel-specific instructions for natural gas, propane, or electric configurations
- Compatible liner, insulated jacket, or zero-clearance liner instructions, when applicable
- The warranty document
- Documentation for selected accessories and adjacent appliances
Manufacturers use different names for related protective accessories, including insulated jackets, liners, insulating liners, and zero-clearance liners. Those terms do not make accessories interchangeable. Keep the complete document set through fabrication and installation because revisions can change.
Measure the Opening and Island Cavity Separately
A stone opening that fits the grill face plate does not confirm that the cabinet cavity, protective liner, support structure, or utility route will fit. These are separate measurement problems.
Finished Countertop Opening
Record the manufacturer-specified cutout width, depth, and height, plus any notch, flange, or proud-cutout instructions. Also confirm whether the opening changes when a compatible liner or jacket is used.
Interior Cavity and Support
The interior cavity must accommodate the grill or its specified protective accessory, not just the visible countertop opening. Countertop thickness and the support below it can also affect the plan. Your fabricator, island builder, and installer should work from the same current documentation set.
Select the Liner or Jacket Before Templating
A liner or insulated jacket can change the required fabrication opening, so it cannot be treated as an afterthought. Napoleon’s Built-In Series documentation provides different opening dimensions depending on whether a Zero Clearance Liner is used. DCS likewise notes that jacket requirements for a proud cutout can vary by model.
Select only the manufacturer-approved accessory identified for the exact grill model. A similarly sized liner from another grill family is not a substitute for confirmed compatibility.
Determine Whether the Island Is Combustible
The island material can affect which installation path is appropriate. Wood framing, composite materials, and other heat-sensitive construction may require a model-specific protective accessory, while non-combustible construction may follow a different path. Do not transfer one brand’s liner, jacket, or clearance rule to another grill.

What to Give Your Builder or Fabricator
- Island framing material, cabinet-facing material, and countertop material
- Countertop thickness and any heat-sensitive trim, adhesive, finish, or nearby construction
- Exact grill model and fuel type
- Exact compatible liner or jacket part number, if the installation documents require one
- Current grill, liner, and utility documentation
This is the minimum project information a professional needs to evaluate the installation against the applicable manufacturer instructions and local requirements.
Plan Utilities Before Fabrication
Utilities are a fitment issue, not a final detail. Model-specific cutout documents may identify power and gas-line considerations alongside countertop dimensions. The utility path should be planned before framing, drawers, access doors, or adjacent appliances block the cavity.
A licensed gas or electrical professional should confirm the connection method for the selected fuel type and jurisdiction. Electric built-in grills still require electrical planning even when no gas line is needed.
Propane Needs Its Own Enclosure Plan
For propane installations, plan cylinder storage, routing, and enclosure venting before cabinet construction. NFPA 58 addresses safeguarding LP-gas installations, but the applicable code edition, local amendments, and authority having jurisdiction must be confirmed for the project. Do not assume that a generic propane compartment or cabinet layout satisfies local requirements.
Verify Venting Before Cabinet Design
Venting is not a detail to solve after cabinets and countertops are built. A grill installed above a cabinet or another space capable of accumulating gas may require ventilation considerations based on the appliance, fuel type, cabinet design, manufacturer instructions, and local requirements.
NFPA 54 public-comment material discusses vents on opposite sides near the bottom of an enclosure and minimum free-area concepts for certain outdoor cooking-appliance scenarios. That material is code-development context, not confirmation of a universal or locally enforceable vent prescription. Review the NFPA 54 public-comment material only as context, not as a design formula.
Resolve the venting plan using the exact grill manual, the matching liner or jacket manual if used, the fuel type, locally adopted fuel-gas and LP-gas requirements, the local authority having jurisdiction, and a qualified installer or licensed gas professional.
Clearances, Lid Swing, and Service Access
Clearance is more than a combustible-material spacing number. The applicable grill documentation should address clearances around the grill, but practical layout planning also matters.
- Confirm that the hood can open fully in its intended location.
- Preserve usable prep space beside the grill.
- Keep gas shutoff points, electrical connections, drip-management components, and serviceable parts accessible as required.
- Coordinate adjacent doors, drawers, access panels, and appliances so they do not conflict with the grill or utility access.
- Avoid placing the grill in a corner or below an obstruction before confirming lid-opening and clearance guidance.
Replacing a Grill in an Existing Island?
Do not choose a replacement grill by matching nominal width alone. Before shopping, document the existing finished opening, interior cavity, countertop thickness, framing and countertop materials, utility entry points, access panels, venting provisions, lid clearance, and delivery path. Then compare those measurements with the current installation documents for the proposed grill and any required liner or jacket.
An existing opening can be a useful starting point, but it does not establish compatibility with a new model, fuel configuration, or protective accessory.
Pre-Purchase Built-In Grill Worksheet
Do not copy dimensions from a generic online diagram. Record each project value from the current documentation for the exact grill and selected installation accessory.

The Purchase Sequence That Avoids Rework
- Decide whether a built-in grill fits the patio, budget, and permanence of the project.
- Choose the exact grill model and fuel type.
- Download the current cutout and installation documents.
- Confirm enclosure construction and select the compatible liner or jacket if needed.
- Confirm utility routing, propane storage if applicable, venting, clearances, and service access with qualified professionals.
- Give the final documentation set to the island builder and countertop fabricator.
- Fabricate only after the grill and protective accessory are confirmed.
